Disrespect
"Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which Yahweh your God gives you" (Exodus 20:12). Disrespect, the lack of honor toward those worthy of it, is one of the sins named in the Ten Words. Paul lists those who strike or murder their fathers and mothers among the lawless and insubordinate for whom the Law was made (1 Timothy 1:9). Honor is more than politeness. It recognizes the place God has given others in our lives, beginning with our parents, and Paul calls it "the first commandment with a promise" (Ephesians 6:2). This category is part of the series on the Ten Words, which looks at each of the ten sins Yahweh named in His covenant with Israel and what they teach us today. No separate articles have been posted here yet, so for now this page introduces the theme through the commandment itself. You can explore the related studies in The Ten Words and The Law of Moses to see how each commandment reveals the heart of God.
