The Poor

Knowing the nature of God, we imitate Him by giving to those who have less than we do, out of our abundance. Seeing someone else's lack moves us to give from our fullness, so that there can be equality. Giving to the poor is not an extra for especially generous people. It flows from who God is and from following His Son. This section looks at what Scripture teaches about caring for the poor. Its study, "The Basics of Giving to the Poor," shows that this giving begins with imitating and obeying Christ, and then with seeing the real needs of our neighbors. This category is part of Giving & Provision, which also includes teaching on tithing, vows and the foundation of giving. In the Law of Moses, the third tithe was set aside every three years to supply the needs of the priests, the poor and the widows, showing how long God's care for the poor has been part of His covenant. Start here to learn how to give with His heart.
